Madeline Vega is one of Sutton's best friends. Her father is abusive towards her and Thayer because of his very bad temper. When her brother Thayer returns to town, she's upset with Sutton (Emma) because she mistakenly thought Sutton (Emma) knew where Thayer had been all along.
Personality[]
Madeline is noted to be the nicest among her, Sutton, and Charlotte, given how she'd invited Gabriella and Lilianna to their trip even though they weren't even members of the Lying Game, which pissed Sutton off, in one of Sutton's flashbacks.
Although she is known for always obeying her parents, especially her very strict father, she is notorious for lying to him most of the time just so she could hang out with the other Lying Game girls. Sutton even scared her once by attempting to call Mr. Vega and tell him that his daughter was actually going to a college party instead of a library group study, which made Madeline upset and not talk to Sutton afterward. Charlotte shot Sutton a reprimanding look because of that, reminding her to be sensitive when it comes to Madeline's family.
Physical Appearance[]
She has long, sleek black hair and huge brown eyes–though, in the novellas, her eye color is mentioned to be blue. In book one, it is said she has a "ballerina figure" and is very angular. At the end of book one, when Emma tries to escape, it is said she has golden skin.
The Lying Game[]
She is another one of Sutton's best friends and, just like her best friends, comes from a wealthy family. Her biggest secret seems to be about her home life, which involves her abusive father, meek but pushy mother, and missing brother. In The Lying Game, her parents are considered strict and controlling. Her mother always wants Madeline to do ballet and nothing else. Her father is very intense, always demanding her to be perfect as much as possible or she'll get punished if other people see her make mistakes.
Never Have I Ever[]
She seems to be nice and loyal. She is thought, by Emma, to be Sutton's killer. When Emma pressed her about August 31st, she didn't want to talk about it. Charlotte was with her that night, which means she had an alibi.
Her alibi was that she and Char were hanging out, but Emma still needs to figure out what happened. By the end of the book, Madeline explains her alibi for that night. Her father was physically abusing her and that is why she called Sutton that night, she needed her best friend to comfort her. That is what she talked to Charlotte about.
Two Truths and A Lie[]
Thayer returns to town and breaks into Sutton's room, going to her first. Madeline becomes upset with Sutton (Emma) for getting her brother in jail and thinks Sutton knew where Thayer was all along, but that is exactly what Emma thought of her. Charlotte is the only one on her side to help. By the middle of the book, Madeline finally believes Emma and reconciles with her.
Hide and Seek[]
Madeline helps pull the pranks on the Devious Four. She becomes worried when Laurel tries to date Thayer since she wants her brother to get better first and not worry about anything else. It is revealed that she was actually afraid to lose him again as he's the only family she can depend on, the one who truly loves her and who protects her from their father. This is why she never wants him to get in any trouble, and being near Sutton seems to constantly put him in trouble.
