Ethan Landry is the murderer of Sutton Mercer and Nisha Banerjee. It is revealed that he was so in love with Sutton that he would do anything for her such as trying to find her birth mother. He killed her out of rejection.
Biography[]
Ethan is an odd character in the series. It is revealed that he killed a girl named Elizabeth Pascal when he was 10 years old, and though it was first passed off as an accident, he eventually admits that he killed her because she was playing with another kid in the neighborhood. This is very similar to the reason he killed Sutton (jealousy and fear of rejection). He is known to be mysterious and loves writing poetry. He also loves science and lost his chance at a scholarship due to Sutton's antics. Ethan is also a psychopath, he played mind games and showed little to no remorse for killing his friend. Ethan played mind games with the police and his therapist, who happened to be Nisha's dad.
Ethan was obsessed with Sutton, even to the point that he wanted to find Sutton's birth mother. Instead, he found Emma and briefly went to Las Vegas to stalk Emma. That night, after Sutton's conversation with Garrett, Ethan approached Sutton and tried to kiss her. When she didn't reciprocate his feelings, he killed her. Ethan lured Emma to Phoenix by sending the video (which shows someone strangling Sutton) to Travis and hacked Sutton's Facebook account. He hacked the alarm code in Char's and Nisha's house so he can get in. He ran Thayer over that night because he was jealous of Thayer's relationship with Sutton and wished that he would've killed him. He believed that Sutton deserved better and she just couldn't see that. He was good at hacking things so anything was possible for him.
He never meant to fall for Emma but he did. That's why he kept on suggesting someone capable of doing murder so Emma would be blindsided to who the real killer was. When Ethan found out that Nisha found his medical report, he overdosed Nisha's drinking water with Valium causing her to fall on the pool and die.
One of the reasons that he and Thayer Vega didn't get along is because Thayer kept on hitting on Emma (he thought she was Sutton). Another reason is because Ethan was in love with Sutton, and Thayer was secretly dating Sutton.
It was also found out that he stalked her to the canyon the night she died and confessed his feelings for her. When she rejected him, he pushed her over the canyon edge into the ravine. Sutton just had a broken leg, but then Ethan took a jagged, sharp rock and hit her in the head with it, saying "If I can’t have you then no one can".
